What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 (“Body Protection Compound-157”) is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide, a fragment derived from a protein found naturally in stomach juice. In laboratory and animal research it’s been studied for tissue healing — tendon, muscle, gut and other tissues. That research is genuinely interesting, which is exactly why the internet has run so far ahead of it.

  • Natural counterpart: A stable fragment derived from 'Body Protection Compound', a protein in human gastric juice.
  • Target enzyme / receptor: Proposed: VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR2); also the nitric-oxide (NO) system & growth-hormone receptor

What the evidence actually shows

Here’s the honest picture:

  • The promising results are overwhelmingly from animal studies (mostly rodents), often at doses and conditions that don’t translate simply to people.
  • There are no large, rigorous human clinical trials establishing that it works or that it’s safe in humans.
  • Because it isn’t an approved drug, no regulator has reviewed its quality, dosing or long-term effects.

“Promising in mice” is not the same as “proven in people.” A lot of confident claims online quietly skip that gap.

BPC-157 is not an approved medicine. It’s sold as a “research chemical” labelled “not for human use,” which is precisely how sellers sidestep drug regulation — and it’s banned in sport by WADA. Because these products are unregulated, what’s in the vial is unverified: purity, actual dose, sterility and even identity can all be wrong. That’s the core risk, separate from the peptide itself.
